Payroll systems use decimal hours, not minutes. Divide minutes by 60 and round to two decimals — 15 minutes = 0.25, 30 minutes = 0.50, 45 minutes = 0.75. The full chart:

Quarter-hour rounding chart

Many time clocks round punches to 15-minute increments using the 7/8-minute rule before converting to decimals:

How do I convert time to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours. 7 hours 45 minutes = 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 decimal hours. Payroll systems multiply this decimal — never “7.45” — by your hourly rate.

What is 7.75 hours in hours and minutes?

7.75 hours is 7 hours 45 minutes: multiply the decimal part by 60 (0.75 × 60 = 45). The converter above flips between formats as you type.

What is 8 hours 30 minutes in decimal?

8 hours 30 minutes is 8.50 decimal hours, because 30 ÷ 60 = 0.50. At $18/hour that is $153.00 of pay.

Why does my pay stub show different numbers than my clock?

Time clocks display h:mm while payroll computes in decimals, usually rounded to two places — 8:20 becomes 8.33, which is 8 minutes 20 seconds… actually 8 h 19.8 m when reversed. Tiny rounding differences (±0.005 h ≈ 18 seconds) are normal; consistent shortfalls are not.

Is 0.5 hours 50 minutes?

No — 0.5 hours is 30 minutes. Decimal hours are fractions of an hour, not minute counts: 0.25 = 15 min, 0.50 = 30 min, 0.75 = 45 min. The chart below covers every minute from 1 to 60.
